This major chess tournament has just concluded and Alireza Firouzja has won it with a score of 8/11. Fabiano Caruana came in second with 7.5/11. Grigoriy Oparin also had 7.5 points, but due to the tie-break system that FIDE has in place, Caruana gets second place.

Now, Firouzja and Caruana both have gotten a spot at the next Candidates Tournament. This is the tournament that decides who gets a shot at the world chess championship. If you want to follow the Candidates, here’s a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candidates_Tournament_2022

Six players qualified for the FIDE Grand Prix 2022 from this Grand Swiss Chess Tournament, but there were 13 players all tied for third place. Who to choose? FIDE had some tie-breaking rules, but suffice it to say that many deserving players won’t be in that tournament.

Alireza was interviewed, and he declared that the most important game was played yesterday. The final round game was not important. All the top games ended in a draw in this final round. I guess all the players agreed since they all drew their final round game.

I am not going to process this tournament with my rating system because it is a Swiss tournament, which means there’s a lot of players. It would take me a lot of hours to input all of the data. Yeah, it would tell me who the six finishers were that would be going to the FIDE Grand Prix 2022, but that is too much for me especially since I have no power to send the individuals that it sees.
