The Purpose of Paywalls

So, I am reading about this guy belly aching about the information he needs for whatever it was he was doing. Every time he finds an article that has this information, it’s behind a paywall.

Most of us writers make very little money off of what we write. There’s something like 6% of Medium authors that break the $100 per month club, for example. Without getting too lost in the math, that would mean that 94% of authors on Medium are making less than $100 per month.

I write a considerable number of articles on Medium. Some days I can see over a $3.00 day, but many days I see less than a dollar. Last month I made $52. The previous month I made around $30. A little better than half way through this month, I am at $34. So, I might break $60 before this month ends.

I did have three months in a row about a year ago now that I exceeded or was very close to $500 per month. I spent about two months writing a book for my website www.fightchess.com which we are very close to launching now. This site will be revolutionary. And, no I am not just being overly dramatic.

Anyway, the Medium algorithm is punishing me still for that with about 10 or 11 months now in a row well below that $500. I have been close to throwing in the towel at Medium for a while now…
