What is it called when you believe something without proof?

To answer the question directly, it is faith — believing in something without proof. But, then, what can you have faith in?
Well, the most obvious thing you get is all the pseudoscience garbage out there in the world today. People believe the Flat Earth, the Hollow Earth, Young Earth Creationism, Astrology, Alchemy, Tarot, and Dowsing Rods, among many many others. You also get all of the religions. No religion has proved itself valid. Not one. Yet, billions of people are believers of one faith or another. The state of the world needs clear eyed citizens, so this flotsam and jetsam of human thought (or lack thereof) needs immediate upgrading to modern standards.
